Why does AI-generated product content sound generic–and how do you fix it?

October 30, 2026

AI-generated product content often sounds repetitive when models lack product-specific details. See how Inriver Inspire uses your product attributes, brand voice guidelines, and supporting documents to create more informative descriptions that help buyers compare products and find the right fit.

AI-generated product content sounds generic because language models predict likely word sequences from their training data, and product records with few specific details leave them little to work from. You fix it by giving the model product-specific details, voice rules, and approved examples to work from, then comparing your descriptions against each other to catch repeated wording before you publish.

Below, you’ll see where the repetition comes from, what prompts and model settings can and cannot change, which fixes to apply, and how to check your own catalog.

Why does AI-generated product content sound generic?

Four causes explain most of the sameness, and the first three come from how language models are built and used, while the fourth comes from your own product records.

1. Models predict wording and do not retrieve facts.

Google states that generative models don’t retrieve facts; instead, they predict a likely sequence of words based on their training data.

2. Training rewards familiar text.

A 2026 International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) paper identifies a typicality bias in preference data, where annotators systematically favor familiar text, as a data-level driver of mode collapse, which the authors describe as the reduced diversity that post-training alignment often causes.

3. Many users and many models produce similar output.

The Artificial Hivemind study tested more than 70 models on 26,000 real-world open-ended queries and found that a single model repeatedly generates similar responses while different models produce strikingly similar outputs, and Nielsen’s 2025 Global Annual Marketing Survey reports that 47% of companies use AI for content creation.

4. Your product records give the model little to write from.

Providers train language models only on the information available to them, which limits how useful the models are where enterprise-specific knowledge is needed, so you should check your product data model first when descriptions come out generic, because a record can hold accurate, correctly spelled values and still leave the model without a definition of what each field means, which is why AI-ready product data goes beyond clean values.

Can a better prompt or different model settings fix generic AI-generated product content?

Rewriting your prompt or adjusting model settings offers limited control over how similar AI-generated product descriptions are. Published tests have shown only minor improvements in variety from the settings they examined. One notable exception is a prompting method that demonstrated a significant increase in creativity, but this effect was not observed in product descriptions.

One of these settings is temperature, which influences how random the model’s writing is. A study by the School of Computing at the University of Kent in the UK found that higher temperatures produced slightly more original stories, but they were also moderately less coherent.

Additionally, research from the School of Computer Science at Tel Aviv University indicated that adjusting a decoding parameter, another setting that affects writing style, primarily impacts the form of the text rather than its meaning.

The prompting method known as Verbalized Sampling instructs the model to provide multiple responses along with the likelihood of each one. Researchers discovered that this approach increased variety in creative writing by 1.6 to 2.1 times without compromising safety or factual accuracy. However, this method has not been tested on product descriptions.

How do you fix generic AI-generated product content?

You fix generic AI-generated product content by changing what the model receives, and the four changes below work on the details, rules, and examples you give it, so you can apply them in the order listed.

1. Give the model product-specific details to write from.

Ask the people who sell each product which details separate it from similar products in the same category, such as who the product is for, which conditions it suits, or what it does that comparable products do not, and store each detail as its own field in a data model that your business defines.

Your e-commerce or brand team can own these fields, and you then include them in everything you send to the model so that it writes from your details and not from the category average.

2. Write one set of voice rules.

List the tone you want, the claims you can and cannot make, and the phrases your descriptions should avoid; then give the same set to every person and tool that generates copy, so your teams don’t maintain separate versions across tools and create content chaos.

3. Add approved descriptions as examples.

Choose a few descriptions your team has already approved for products in the same category and include them with your instruction, so the model sees the wording and the level of detail you expect before it writes a new description.

4. Compare descriptions across products before you publish.

Place the new descriptions for products in the same category next to each other and rewrite the ones that repeat the same phrases or the same sentence structure, using the checks in the next section.

If you manage your product data in Inriver, you can keep these changes in the same place as your records. Inriver Inspire supports documents as context for its AI, so generated product content draws on technical specs, compliance documents, and installation guides alongside the text and images already in your records.

The Enrich Assistant lets your team describe what it needs in natural language and returns results informed by all relevant PIM data and the extra context you add, without leaving the PIM. Inriver’s autumn 2025 release also includes investments in brand terms, glossaries, and style guidance that keep product information accurate, consistent, and ready for use in any channel.

How do you check your product descriptions for sameness?

You check for sameness by reading the descriptions for products in one category together, because humans substantially outperform automatic metrics in estimating content diversity, and the five checks below show you what to look for.

Where does a PIM fit when you create product descriptions with AI?

A PIM system sits between the people who supply your product information and the AI that writes your descriptions, connecting your upstream systems to your downstream channels and giving you the structure to define attributes, relationships, and validation rules your AI writes from.

The four changes above depend on the model receiving the same details, rules, and context every time, which becomes harder when many product teams cut and paste content into tools like ChatGPT or Claude to enrich large catalogs.

With a PIM in the middle, your teams supply product details, voice rules, and supporting documents once; the AI writes from the records and rules stored there, and your team reviews the descriptions before they reach a channel. In Inriver, your team can describe what it needs in natural language and receive results informed by all relevant PIM data and the extra context you add, without leaving the PIM.
